Galavant‘s Mallory Jansen joins Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 as an important electronic enigma.
According to TV Line, Jansen will play the artificial intelligence known as AIDA, who was introduced in the final moments of the season 3 finale.
Created by the kind-of-bonkers but hilariously brilliant Dr. Holden Radcliffe (John Hannah), AIDA is part of a new Life Model Decoy program all but guaranteed to reek havoc upon our agents. AIDA, whose name stands for Artificial Intelligence Data Analyser, has appeared sporadically in Marvel comics since its debut in 1985.
The finale featured showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen as the voice of the program, but with this new addition, presumably AIDA will both sound and look a lot more like Mallory Jansen in season 4.
Mallory Jansen is best known for her role as the wicked Madalena on ABC’s beloved musical farce Galavant. No word yet on whether or not AIDA might grace us with song on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4, but it wouldn’t be out of step with other series in the superhero pantheon.
Though much of AIDA’s role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 remains the domain of speculation, Jansen’s character is ahead of the game compared to other new faces joining the ABC series: Her character already has a name.
Jason O’Mara has been announced as portraying the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Coulson’s stead, but his character remains anonymous. Parminder Nagra’s anti-Inhuman politician remains similarly nameless.
But at least we know the name of one antagonist — Robbie Reyes, the new face inhabited by the eerily familiar Ghost Rider. Gabriel Luna will take over that role, and presumably send the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. down a path more mysterious than anything they have yet faced.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
